The Starving Artist empowers people through creative arts, highlighting lived experiences to drive systemic reform. We foster authentic and vulnerable engagement to promote change within current systems. Our innovation lies in platforming people-centered solutions, championing emerging voices to creatively explore their experiences. We address topics like health inequities, women's rights, migrant experiences, and climate action. At our core, we connect artists, individuals, and key players to collaborate on diverse art engagements, including exhibitions, publications, public art campaigns, and workshops.art unites for unstoppable social change + transformation through collaboration, advocacy + action.

	reflection cards

Currently we offer four different sets that offer art-based prompts and reflective questions to help people process and engage with their experiences.
Some themes include voices above water for climate-wellbeing, the migrant voice for exploration of affects and impacts of migration labour, the vulnerable man for exploring men’s mental health and the starving artist cards for eating disorders and body image reflection.

	behind the smokeart-based reflection cards
for tobacco and drug-use addiction
artworks by ally zlatarThe Behind the Smoke Reflection Cards, created by artist and activist Ally Zlatar, are a carefully curated collection designed to address the complexities of tobacco and drug addiction. Featuring evocative artworks, these cards serve as a platform for introspection and personal growth. With diverse prompts and exercises, users can explore their relationship with substances, employ cognitive behavioral techniques, and examine cultural and traditional influences. The cards are adaptable and particularly effective for those seeking alternative paths in their recovery journey, whether for confronting emotions, rediscovering themselves, or expressing experiences through art in a supportive and safe space.

These inclusive cards consider often overlooked aspects of addiction, such as cultural influences, identity, belonging, peer pressure, isolation, and trauma intersectionality. Their digital accessibility extends their transformative potential to individuals without access to traditional therapy or support resources. Behind the Smoke Reflection Cards are a valuable tool for artists, therapists, and individuals dealing with addiction-related issues. They foster creativity and introspection, providing a powerful resource that empowers individuals on their journey toward self-discovery and healing.

belongingartists navigating identity in the african diaspora

Belonging delves into the depths of a transformative journey, drawing inspiration from key theorists such as Bell Hooks and W. E. B. Du Bois. Through these works, we explore diverse perspectives and artistic expressions that illuminate the intricate relationship between art and the quest for identity within the African diaspora.
Moving beyond visual allure, these artworks serve as poignant messengers, urging systemic reform, the preservation of connections in diasporic communities, and a collective plea for humanity in the face of adversity. Drawing from Bell Hooks, we emphasize the power of art to authentically engage with the complexities of identity rather than the singularity of ‘being black’. The Starving Artist aims to encourage reflection on the profound impact of belonging and identity formation through the lived-in experiences of artists to examine more in-depth what it means to navigate African diasporic identity in the 21st century.

The Starving Artist proudly presents Break The Silence

featuring over 25 artists

from 15+ countries

"Break the Silence to End the Violence" addresses the urgent issue of gender-based violence (GBV), a pervasive obstacle to gender equality and a critical human rights challenge across Europe. This exhibition, supported by The Starving Artist and the Young European Movement (YEM), seeks to amplify awareness and drive change through visual storytelling, data, and lived experiences, offering a powerful platform to highlight the range of abuses faced by individuals, particularly women, in today’s society—from physical and psychological violence to financial control and cyber abuse. Despite progress, GBV remains entrenched; in the UK, for instance, one woman is killed every three days.

Mills, Lucy. (n.d.). Ni una mas / Not One More, [Textile - applique, machine/hand embroidery; approx. 60 x 100 cm].

Recent legislative measures, such as the European Union’s first law combating GBV, signify important strides, yet these measures have not fully addressed the complexity of the issue. To bridge the gap, this exhibition advocates for systemic policy reform, including the criminalization of misogyny as a hate crime and the immediate suspension of police officers accused of GBV until investigated.
Through interactive installations and insights from recent polls, "Break the Silence to End the Violence" emphasizes the need for representation in political leadership to mitigate GBV and champion safer societies via the power of creative voices. This exhibition encourages visitors to envision a world where young people can realize their full potential in supportive and violence-free environments.

navigating period equity through artists perspectives

If not accessible please visit by clicking here

There are few issues as fundamental yet overlooked as menstrual health and period equity. Constantly shrouded in stigma, menstruation is looked upon by many as a “taboo” topic, leaving the subset of issues surrounding it often unaddressed. The works curated for this publication serve as a testament to the ongoing struggle for menstruators’ rights and autonomy worldwide, a reminder that their voices deserve to be heard, and a call to action towards lifting the stigma shrouding it.Menstrual blood is the only kind of blood that is not traumatically induced. Yet, in modern society, this is the most hidden blood, the one so rarely spoken of and almost never seen, except privately by women.

Key issues highlighted include period poverty, which is characterized by a lack of access to menstrual products, hygiene facilities, waste management, and education, affecting women worldwide and causing significant physical, mental, and emotional challenges. The stigma surrounding periods further exacerbates these issues, preventing open discussion and leading to insufficient data and research. Additionally, the environmental impact of disposable menstrual products calls for innovative and sustainable solutions. Despite government efforts, deep-rooted cultural practices and gender inequality continue to perpetuate period poverty and discrimination, such as ‘period huts’ or Nepal's "chhaupadi" tradition. Addressing these issues requires intersectoral collaboration and increased global awareness. This exhibition aims to show that creative voices are powerful tools for raising awareness and authentically addressing the complexities of period activism.

When the tigers break free, Ally Zlatar, Acylic, 2023.
As each drop of blood trickles down,
How my senses are sharpened anew, as if just found.
With every cautious step and sweatful glance I take,
I hold myself while barely surviving the long-awaited ache.

words
words
unsolicited advice
and thoughtless words

How bitter and sharp the jolt that dragged on through and through,
But in the presence of ignorance and inattention caused my fury to brew.
Steadying the pace of each of my sisters, we stride together, hand in hand,
For the naturalness and confidence of womanhood is with what we stand.

The sharper they bite,
The stronger we fight.

By exploring apocalyptic themes, we confront our deepest fears, our hopes for survival, and the potential for rebirth and renewal. care for a body

where art meets activism; disability justice in care

open call

The theme of the exhibition is disability rights within the UK (and globally), centred around the increasingly oppressive system of government that prioritises capital over people, endangering the lives of people with disabilities by implementing austerity measures that severely decrease their quality of life. This exhibition aims to bridge understanding by creating a conversation that pushes for lasting change to support those with disabilities and better their quality of life.
Championing disabled artists will serve to highlight the structural inequalities disabled people face in their day to day, raising awareness of issues otherwise unknown or disregarded by the general public. The overarching objective of this exhibition is to alter public perception around disability rights, creating a community space, a system of support that directly combats the individualist nature of our society.

Curatorial Statement

Disabled people are one of the most oppressed groups within the UK. According to the report ‘Time to Think Again’, 42% of families that rely on disability benefits are in poverty. The UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities stated that the UK was in ‘grave violation’ of the UN convention due to austerity measures that severely affected social care, housing, and disability benefits, namely Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and the Independent Living Fund (ILF). A coalition of organisations formed by disabled communities highlighted that austerity measures are already responsible for tens of thousands of deaths by forcing disabled people into poverty, with little access to support or employment.

Art as a form of political activism has worked to champion disability rights in the past, most notably by the Disabled Arts Movement that led to the implementation of what is now known as the Equality Act in the UK. By showcasing disabled artists in an online group exhibition and then featuring a selection in a physical space, accompanied by an open mic night, we aim to counter the demonisation of disabled people, platforming their voices and advocating for community based, people centred reform for disabled people in the UK and around the world.

Enya Esteban Prince passionately explores the intricacies of daily life and the human psyche, focusing on women's experiences. She is a Spanish-British artist who highlights the complexity of the human experience in her work. As the curator, Enya's role deeply resonates with the exhibition's exploration of identity, belonging, struggles, and representation.
